What the spot price means
The spot price is the current market price for one troy ounce of pure metal traded in bulk. It moves throughout the day while world markets are open.
- A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than a regular ounce.
- Melt value is a coin's pure metal content times the spot price. It's what the metal is worth, not what a dealer will pay or charge.
- Dealers sell bullion for a premium over spot and usually buy common coins a little below melt.
